If you’re a parent, you’ve probably had conversations that shocked you at the gravity of their situation. The same kid who asked over and over “why” at age 4 suddenly stops talking to you around age 12. And the conversations you wish you had – those fueled by your desire to see your child not only safe and healthy, but passionately engaged – feel painfully impossible to execute. But effective communication can be cultivated, learned and taught. As you improve, so will your children.

William Stixrud, Ph.D., and Ned Johnson have 60 years of combined experience talking to children one-on-one. The most common question they ask themselves when speaking to parents and educators is: what do you say? While many adults understand the importance and power of the philosophies behind the books that dominate the parenting bestseller list, parents often wonder how to put these concepts into action.

In their latest book, the authors show how to engage in respectful and effective dialogue, starting with defining and demonstrating the basics of listening and speaking. They share new ways of dealing with specific and thorny gender topics that usually end in parent / child dead ends: providing constructive feedback to children; discuss the limits around technology; explain sleep and their brains; anxiety about current events; and family problem solving.

Dr Stixrud is a clinical neuropsychologist and faculty member at Children’s National Medical Center and George Washington University Medical School. Johnson is the founder of PrepMatters and an adolescent speaker and coach for study skills, parent-adolescent dynamics, and anxiety management. They are the bestselling co-authors of “The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives”.

The event, co-sponsored by several local organizations, will be recorded and available later on FAN’s website and YouTube channel. For more information, visit
