Global tablet and Chromebook shipments down for fourth consecutive quarter

Global tablet shipments fell for the fourth consecutive quarter, with tech analyst firm Canalys reports a decline of 11% year-on-year to 34.8 million units in the second quarter of 2022.

Chromebooks have followed a similar trajectory as they saw declining shipments for the fourth consecutive quarter. However, the fall for the current quarter was much larger, at 57%, with shipments only reaching 5.1 million units, as demand from the education sector continued to decline.

Apple’s shipments for the quarter fell 15% year-on-year with 12.1 million iPads shipped, while Samsung shipped 7.0 million tablets, a year-on-year decline of 13%.

Lenovo was third with 3.5 million tablets shipped, down 25% year-on-year, while Amazon (3.3 million units, 6% growth) and Huawei (1. 7 million units, 26% decline) round out the top five.

Analyst Himani Mukka said rapidly declining consumer and education demand accelerated the drop in tablet shipments as the world moved away from the peak of the pandemic.

“Inflation and fears of a recession are at the forefront of consumer concerns, and spending on tablets has taken a back seat as the need for pandemic-era usage levels has diminished,” he said. he declared.

“Unlike laptops, tablets aren’t vital to business productivity, so retail demand hasn’t helped offset lower consumer purchases. Although consumer weakness is expected to persist in Q3, Back-to-school deals and new tablet launches ahead of the holiday spending season will provide a slight boost in demand.

“Trade-wise, the outlook is more optimistic, although shipments remain relatively weak. Substantial orders from governments in key Asia-Pacific markets remain in place and are expected to be delivered as bottlenecks in the supply chain and inflation fears are easing.

“Countries in the region are turning to domestic production as governments actively encourage citizens to buy locally made products. Many top players including Lenovo, Acer and Samsung have already made the switch, especially in India.

Chromebook shipments also saw steep declines for major vendors; Acer’s shipments fell by 28%, Lenovo’s by 56% and HP’s by 79%.

“Chromebooks are now being impacted by lower year-over-year shipments every quarter since the third quarter of 2021,” said Brian Lynch, research analyst at Canalys. “This period of negative growth was an expected transition following the saturation of the two largest education markets in the category, the United States and Japan.

“Now, the global Chromebook market is poised for a period of more consistent performance, with fewer shipments and more traditional seasonality than seen during the pandemic.

“In recent months, there has been a significant buildup of Chromebook inventory in the channel amid slowing demand. Although primarily due to lower education demand, Chromebooks have also struggled. in the business segment lately.

“Channel partners have signaled a cautious outlook on market growth prospects and many are still not carrying the category. two consecutive quarters of sequential growth.
