IT Rules 2021 Empower and Protect Users: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Computer and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Sunday that the new information technology rules empower and protect users. The new IT rules will ensure a safer and more responsible social media ecosystem in India, the minister said.

” Reviewed the implementation and compliance of Information Technology Rules, 2021 with my colleague Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar ji. These guidelines empower and protect users and will ensure a more secure and responsible social media ecosystem in India, ”Vaishnaw said in an article posted on the Koo platform, India’s Twitter competitor. The new rules that went into effect on May 25 require social media companies to establish a grievance mechanism to resolve complaints from users or victims.

All major social media companies, with a user base of over 50 lakh, must appoint a grievance manager to handle these complaints and share the names and contact details of those managers.

Large social media companies are mandated to appoint a compliance officer, a nodal contact person and a resident grievance officer. All must be residents of India.

Twitter, which had been in the eye of the storm for its alleged breach of new IT rules in India, appointed Vinay Prakash as the Resident Grievance Officer for India, according to the company’s website.

However, Facebook-owned Whatsapp has challenged new IT rules for social media intermediaries requiring the messaging app to track chats and make arrangements to identify the first sender of the information, claiming they violate the right to privacy and are unconstitutional.

Whatsapp further alleged that the requirement for intermediaries to allow identification of the first information sender in India by government or court order puts end-to-end encryption and its benefits “at risk”.

Some media houses have also challenged the new IT rules and the case is pending.
