MYOB minds its own business with Snowflake

Enterprise software provider MYOB has adopted the Snowflake Data Cloud to improve data access, management and analysis.

MYOB wanted to make better use of its internal data to support its employees and improve customer services, explained Stefanie Kechayas, MYOB Data Platform Manager.

“Solutions like Snowflake allow us to better understand our customers and make evidence-based decisions about which features are best for them,” she said.

“To achieve this, however, we realized we needed to make fundamental changes to the way our data is stored and managed.”

Replacing the previous platform with Snowflake has allowed the company to better organize and aggregate this data, as well as get insights faster.

“We had a very large data landscape, so our biggest challenge was making sense of that information,” Kechayas said.

“The way we configured our data solutions in the past tended to focus on particular data sources. Now we have the ability to be much more dynamic in how we view and work with our data.”

While the previous system used at MYOB brought together multiple sets of data in one location, it did not support self-service.

“A lot of team members just didn’t know where to start. We knew we had to find a platform that could empower product managers to make informed decisions about which features bring the most value to our customers,” Kechayas said.

“We also wanted our senior executives to have easier access to data and our delivery teams to create data science-based solutions for our customers.”

MYOB settled on Snowflake in November 2020 and began deployment in December 2020.

Once up and running, Snowflake made it easy for staff to access and use a wide variety of datasets, and domain controllers can add users and data without involving the company’s data team. company.

“In addition to removing technical barriers, Snowflake is really helping us change the data culture in our company,” Kechayas said. “Better visibility and access to data means people are more likely to use data in new and innovative ways.”

Other benefits include faster processing (the daily Master Sales Dashboard report is generated in nine minutes instead of three hours) and MYOB becomes a more attractive place to work for engineers and data analysts.

“Competition for top talent is strong and we are always looking for ways to strengthen our team,” Kechayas said.

MYOB also looks forward to extracting even more value from the new Snowflake platform in the months and years to come.

“For us, the barriers to using data have been removed,” she said.
