RACV launches videos to promote electric scooter safety

The Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) says it has taken the lead on safety by releasing a series of videos explaining how to ride electric scooters safely and the rules in place to protect drivers and other road users.

The videos are available on the arevo by RACV website at arevo.com.au/e-scooters and feature information on the e-scooter trials taking place in Melbourne City, Yarra, Port Phillip and Ballarat.

Topics covered in the videos include using an e-scooter, traffic rules, what to do to be safe, and how to interact with other modes of transport while riding.

RACV Managing Director Mobility Elizabeth Kim said there have been more than a million e-scooter trips to Victoria since trials began this year in February.

“RACV is committed to giving Victorians choice in how they get around – whether by car, bike, foot, public transport or electric scooter,” Kim said.

“We want to make sure that safety is a priority for all road users when it comes to testing and using electric scooters and that is why we have produced these videos which are available on the website of ‘arevo by RACV.

“The videos help Victorians easily understand the rules that apply to electric scooters before jumping in for a ride. The arevo app can also help users plan safe trips around Melbourne using an e-scooter.

In its effort to make Victorian roads safe for all modes of transport, RACV has announced it has partnered with Lime, an organization involved in the Melbourne e-scooter trial.

Managing Director of Lime Australia and New Zealand, Hugo Burt-Morrissaid the rules on electric scooters vary in different states in Australia, so it’s important to understand Melbourne’s laws.

“We need to ensure that we continue to communicate all rules and safety measures around electric scooters, so that Victorians can use this convenient and cleaner means of transport with confidence.

“Thanks to their ease of use and low emissions, electric scooters are proving particularly popular in Melbourne.

“The safety and compliance information gathered from these trials will help us understand the benefits and risks of electric scooters; including how e-scooters interact with other road users and what the optimal longer-term rules and regulations should be.
